AMPP vs NACE: What Changed and What It Means for CP Professionals

Part of
Certification Path (CP1–CP4)

Many corrosion professionals still ask: Is NACE the same as AMPP? The short answer is yes — but the history matters.

AMPP (the Association for Materials Protection and Performance) was formed through the merger of two major industry organizations: NACE International and SSPC (The Society for Protective Coatings).

What Was NACE?

NACE International was historically a leading global organization for corrosion engineering, cathodic protection standards, and CP certification programs. For decades, CP certifications were commonly referred to as “NACE CP 1,” “NACE CP 2,” and so on.

What Changed?

NACE International and SSPC merged to form AMPP. The goal was to unify corrosion control and protective coatings expertise under one global organization.

As a result:

  • NACE certifications became AMPP certifications (administratively and by branding)
  • Existing certifications remained valid
  • Certification numbering (CP 1–CP 4) remained consistent

Is a NACE Certification Still Valid?

Yes. Certifications originally issued under NACE remain recognized. They are now administered under AMPP.

Are AMPP and NACE CP Certifications Different?

In most practical contexts, the CP certification track is the same progression (CP 1 through CP 4) under the AMPP name:

For a side-by-side overview, see: AMPP CP certification levels comparison.

Why the Merger Matters

  • Unified corrosion and coatings communities under one organization
  • Streamlined training and credential branding
  • Broader scope spanning corrosion control and protective coatings
  • Improved consistency for global programs and industry communication

Which Name Should You Use?

In modern professional settings, use “AMPP.” However, many employers and job listings still reference “NACE CP” due to long-standing recognition. In practice, it’s common to see:

  • “AMPP CP3” on current documentation
  • “NACE CP3” on older documentation or job postings

In practical terms, if someone says “NACE CP 3,” they are referring to what is now formally called “AMPP CP 3.” The certification lineage continues — the organization name evolved.
